China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as China Railway) announced on March 1 that the volume of national railway freight in January and February has reached 360 million tons and 310 million tons respectively, together with a year-on-year increase of 0.6%, which breaks the record of the same period since its establishment in 2013.
According to China Railway, the novel coronavirus epidemic has limited impact on railway freight, because the railway freight structure is stable and dominated by bulk commodities, 60% of which are coals.
In recent years, railway freight volume has continued to rise due to favorable factors such as the increasing coal demand and the policy of reducing road transport volume and increasing rail transport volume. In 2019, the national railway achieved a shipment of 3.44 billion tons, up by 7.8% compared to the previous year. Before then, the highest record hovered on 3.295 billion tons in 2011.
